DAYSTAR: A great image for me was formed when she said "She wanted a little room for thinking: but she saw diapers steaming on the line and doll slumped behind the door." This image formed was of a mother who had been working all day with the children and fulfilling her many household duties who just needs a break but she knows that a mothers work is never done so she carries on with her tasks. During the little time she does have to sit for a while she knows that, that's all she needs is a little break where peace and silence is of the essence.
A PAIR OF SILK STOCKINGS: In this story you can see how the value of a dollar is of great importance and how if the mother was able to provide for her family in the way that she wishes their lives would be even happier. A heart warming feeling came when the author said "The vision of her little brood looking fresh and dainty and new for once in their lives excited her and made her restless......." the image formed was that of a mother window shopping and seeing the possibilities of the what the garments could do for her children. All she wants is better for her and her family and this is very clear throughout the whole story.
WHY I WANT A WIFE: "I would like to go back to school so that I can become economically independent, support myself, and, if need be, support those dependent upon me. I want a wife who will work and send me to school." This image makes me think of how independent women are becoming today. With all the resources available women are becoming the head of there own businesses and working there way up the financial scale.

daystar: I had the same image while reading daystar. It makes me think of how little respect and appreciation mothers get for all that they do for their families. Although I don't have kids, I feel like I can relate because she just feels like her responsibilities are never ending. I know we all feel like that with school and work and everything sometimes you just want to sit down and take a break. In class we pointed out the palace she was imagining and that makes me think she had bigger dreams than being a mother and now her day dreaming is her only escape.
ReplyDeleteA pair of silk stockings: We debated about this in class about whether she was wrong or right to spend the only on her self. I think she definitely deserved every bit of the day she enjoyed. Also, I think the impulsiveness of her spending and indulging speaks to how mothers are too busy caring about their families that they forget about their needs and once she felt how good it was (obviously she hadnt had time to herself in a while) she couldnt stop herself, which I feel is ok of her for one day at least.
Why i want a wife: I definately agree with you about how women are working their way up in society! I think it is very sad how it is 2010 and women are still fighting to be equal! Why has it taken so long? Gender should not make a difference
I think it is interesting that in "A Pair of Silk Stockings" that she had started the story with different ideas on how she was going to spend the money on everyone but herself, to the point of fantasizing about it. By the end of the story, it was as if she got so caught up in spending the money that she lost her initial intentions.
