The image that stood out to me in "Daystar"was the reference to the cricket: "the pinched armor of a vanished cricket". This, to me, made me think about this woman leaving her own "skin" at that point in time. She discusses how this short amount of time is an escape for her. Therefore the image of the cricket's skin gives off the idea that this is a time of renewal for the woman. She is able to escape her daily chores/concerns and takes time to regroup. This image is a summary for the poem as a whole because it indirectly summarizes how she feels and the idea of renewal. During this time alone, she is renewing her spirit.
The image that stood out to me in "A Pair of Silk Stockings" was the one in which desribes her children: "The vision of her little brood looking fresh and dainty and new for once in their lives excited...". I had to look at this section of the text again because after reading the entire text, I noticed that there was a conflict of interest going on. I could invision the happiness of the children as the show off their new look and could also see the mother's happiness through the childrens excitement. However, as the text progresses, she soon forgets about the children and pleases herself. This image of her happiness through her children and then the happiness through her own gain really functions in the text as a whole. It shows how one's true self can change once a new monetary value is and material items are added to the picture.
In "Why I Want a Wife", a lot of images stood out to me. However, they were not as out of the ordinary as some of the images in other texts and poems that we have read because the images in "Why I Want A Wife" are very stereotypic of women's roles in society. "I want a wife who will keep my house clean...pick up after me...cooks the meals..." These descriptions evoked the image of a susie homemaker or a stereotypic housewife. They function as a whole in the text because they represent the duties of a wife and mother that our society has created for us. Overall, I felt the text put too much of a negative image on being a mother and a wife. I feel that the image of a mother and a wife has changed since the time Syfers wrote this because women are currently holding jobs while still being a mother and a wife. It is possible to do so and is becoming more and more acceptable in today's society.
