The Revolt of Mother: The quote that stood out most to me in this passage was: "Adoniram was like a fortress whose walls had no active resistance, and went down the instant the right besieging tools were used." At this point, I felt proud of Sarah for holding her ground and gaining that sense of power that she had lingering inside her for what she describes as forty years. This passage strongly shows the change in women's roles throughout history because this once submissive wife is now strong and outspoken. I also liked the fact that while Father cried because he finally understood the feelings that his wife had felt for all the years of their marriage. The last part of this passage that stood out to me was when Sarah directed the men who were carrying the hay into the new barn. Father had been absent that morning and she took control and started giving out orders like it was no one's business. Sarah is a strong woman who knows what she wants and now had the right "tools" to get it.
Trifles: This passage was one that indirectly showed the contrast between men and women's perceptions on similar situations. The conversation that stands out most to me is the one that takes place in the kitchen. Mrs. Hale: Those towels get dirty awful quick. Men's hands aren't always as clean as they might be. County Attorney: Ah, loyal to your sex, I see. After reading this conversation several times, I was happy Mrs. Hale stood up to the county attorney with her sarcasm. I felt that this play demonstrated the different views of men vs. women which is why the conversation I chose functioned in the text as whole.
As Children Together: The line that stood out to me most in this poem was : "Your mirror grew ringed with photos of servicemen who had taken your breasts in their hands, the buttons of your blouses in their teeth..." After reading this, I thought to myself how many men is this girl seeing right now? I was confused if there really were several men in her life or if there was only one man who covered her entire mirror... I felt this passage functions in the poem as a whole because it embraces the idea of this woman not being sure of herself in terms of her love life and it was as if she almost settled for one of the men that came back for her.
